Türkiye Defteri and Turkish Cinema


Türkiye Defteri was a monthly magazine founded by a few intellectuals who felt and thought about the need for a local Marxism, filling an important gap in thought in Turkey in the 1970s.

The owner and director of the magazine, which was published between April 1971 and June 1975, was Naci Çelik Berksoy. Its founders were Naci Çelik, Hulki Aktunç, and Taylan Altuğ. The magazine also covered Kemal Tahir's views. Marxism and the Ottoman Empire, and Westernization were the main agenda items. Special issues covered Mustafa Suphi, Kemal Tahir, Nazım Hikmet, and Orhan Kemal.

Apart from its founders, its writers also included Kemal Tahir, Selahattin Hilav, Sezer Tansuğ, Selim İleri, Tomris Uyar, Leyla Erbil, Hilmi Yavuz, Necati Güngör, and Ercüment Akman with his cinema writings. In Memoriam | Şerif Gören (1944-2024)

Veteran director Şerif Gören, passed away at the age of 80.

Famous director Şerif Gören fell and hit his head at home on November 22, 2024. Gören, who was the director of the first Turkish film to win an award at the Cannes Film Festival, 'Yol', was taken to Taksim First Aid Hospital. Şerif Gören, whose health condition was serious, and was intubated.

The following statements were made in a statement made on the social media account of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism:

"We learned with deep sorrow of the passing of veteran director Şerif Gören, who brought unforgettable works to Turkish cinema. His unique mark and efforts in our art world will always be remembered. We wish God's mercy upon the deceased and offer our condolences to his family, loved ones and the cinema community."

Şerif Gören (b. October 14, 1944 Xanthi, Greece - d.December 08, 2024 Istanbul)

Şerif Gören, who has produced award-winning films in Turkish cinema such as 'Yılanların Öcü', 'Derman', 'Umut' and 'Yol'.

Şerif Gören, who came to Turkey with a scholarship in 1956 and studied at Istanbul Boys High School, took his first step into cinema with Erman Film Studio, where he started working as an editor in 1962. He gained the fast editing approach that is the distinctive feature of his films while he was working as an editor here.

Şerif Gören, who first worked as an assistant director in Mehmet Aslan's 'Hakanların Savaşı' in 1968 and developed himself in this field, worked with directors such as Remzi Jöntürk, Atıf Yılmaz, Yılmaz Güney, Natuk Baytan, and Osman Seden.

Şerif Gören took over the directorship of 'Endişe' in 1974, after Yılmaz Güney was arrested during the first days of shooting. Gören, who won the 'Best Director' award at the Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival with this first film, achieved great success by winning the 'Golden Palme' award at the Cannes Film Festival with 'Yol', the script of which was written by Yılmaz Güney.

Şerif Gören, one of the most productive directors of Turkish cinema, has directed commercial films and documentaries as well as films that generally have a social realism approach. Gören mostly deals with subjects such as urban life and the relationship between nature and humans in his films.
